Doing-Business-As (DBA) Certificates

Massachusetts General Law Chapter 110 Section 5, requires that any person conducting business under any business name other than the real name of the person conducting the business must file a Doing Business As certificate with the Town Clerk’s office.  A person, in this case, is defined as an individual, a partnership or a corporation. The cost is $40.00 and it valid for four years.

Exemptions to filing are allowed if the corporation is doing business in its true corporate name, or if a partnership is doing business under any title that includes the surname of any partner.  Other exemptions exist for trust and limited partnerships.  If your business is registered with the Secretary of the Commonwealth's office and you are operating your business under that name, you do not have to file for a DBA Certificate.

The Town Clerk’s office registers a business by way of the Business or DBA Certificate.  This registration does not allow or permit any business rights with respect to the provisions of the Zoning Bylaws nor is it a substitute for any other license or permit required by the town.  Please contact the Zoning Enforcement Officer in the Building Department for questions regarding permitted uses at your location.
