Mission
The mission of the Board of Health is to provide for the health and welfare of the residents of West Boylston by enforcement of local, state and national regulations as required by law. We strive to prevent the spread of disease, promote a healthy community and environment.

The Board of Health is made up of 5 residents, appointed by the Town Administrator for 3-year terms.  The Board of Health is a statutory board, which gets its authority under Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 111.

Among our many activities are:

  • Enforcement of the Massachusetts State Sanitary Code (05 CMR 410)
  • Enforcement of Title 5 regulations with regard to property transfers, new installations and repair of septic systems
  • Enforcement of The Retail Food Code (105 CMR 590)
  • Inspect restaurants, retail stores and workplaces for continued compliance with 'Regulation for the Sale of Tobacco Products to Minors and the Massachusetts Smoke-free Workplace Law'.
  • Monitor air and water quality- alongside other towns and state agencies
  • Respond to nuisance complaints

Creation
Town meeting of March 23, 1891, under Article 16, authorized the election of a three-member Board of Health. Chapter 23 of the Acts of 1995 changed the Board from elected to appointed. At that time, the Board was expanded from three to five members.

Fun Fact

'In 1799, Paul Revere was Chairman of the Board of Health in Boston, the first local health board in Massachusetts.
