Welcome to the West Boylston Healthy Living Program!
There has been an alarming increase in the number of Americans who are overweight in the past quarter century. Every day in Massachusetts, people die needlessly from heart disease, stroke and diabetes. Let's do what we can to help the residents and employees of the Town escape this fate. As the Massachusetts Association of Health Boards says, "Cities and towns that provide opportunities for physical activity and healthy eating become more inviting places to live."
At the behest of the Board of Selectmen, our Town Administrator, Leon Gaumond, has been working with the Board of Health, the Council On Aging, the Insurance Advisory Committee and employees of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health to begin the West Boylston Health Living Program. This program incorporates both residents and employees of the Town and includes a focus on physical activity, health education and healthy choices.

Physical Activity refers to activities that get people up and active. Thirty minutes of moderate activity five or more days a week reduces the risk of type 2 diabetes and premature death from heart disease. An additional half-hour of daily activity helps those who need to shed extra pounds. |
Healthy Choices refers to lifestyle choices that have a direct impact on the overall health of the individuals and the community. Healthy eating and quitting smoking are good examples of Healthy Choices. |
Health Education refers to increasing the awareness of certain diseases and illness in an attempt to catch health problems early on in order to manage them properly. |
By including Town employees as well as Town residents, we hope to help manage our health insurance costs and increase the health and wellness of our workforce, too!
Each month, we will focus on bringing you information on a particular health topic and possibly holding public programs or seminars on the subject. Check this web site and our public access cable channel for information. Stop by the Board of Health office for leaflets and flyers. And join us for any public programs on offer.
