March is nutrition awareness month

This month in our healthy living program we tackle the issue of nutrition. Every five years the federal government conducts a complete analysis of the issue of nutrition through their Dietary Guidelines for Americans. “The intent of the Dietary Guidelines is to summarize and synthesize knowledge regarding individual nutrients and food components into recommendations for a pattern of eating that can be adopted by the public. In this publication, Key Recommendations are grouped under nine inter-related focus areas. The recommendations are based on the preponderance of scientific evidence for lowering risk of chronic disease and promoting health. It is important to remember that these are integrated messages that should be implemented as a whole. Taken together, they encourage most Americans to eat fewer calories, be more active, and make wiser food choices.” (Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2005 Executive Summary)

These guidelines give specific recommendations and actions steps for all Americans. For your information, I have included a great deal of information about these guidelines at the Town's website under March's topic of nutrition. ~Our website for the Nutrition Awareness page is found at http://www.westboylston-ma.gov/Pages/WBoylstonMA_Healthy/nutrition.

To help you and your family prepare healthy meals, please feel free to check out this website www.cnpp.usda.gov/Publications/FoodPlans/MiscPubs/FoodPlansRecipeBook.pdf. You will have access to Recipes and Tips for Healthy, Thrifty Meals, a great guide and cookbook to healthy eating. Enjoy and please remember to save me a plate if you make anything delicious.
