At the Selectmen’s Meeting of January 20, 2010, the Board of Selectmen approved the following Town Goals and Objectives for 2010. ~Over the next few weeks, the Town Administrator will be developing a strategy for meeting these goals. ~In no particular order, the goals for 2010 are:
- Develop a marketing program for West Boylston: One of the Master Plan’s recommendations from 2005 was to develop a formal program to market the Town. It was also mentioned as a suggestion at the EDTF Business Roundtable and was considered to be a priority for the Selectmen.
- Gateway improvement/beautification: One of the items that came out of our EDTF Business Round Table meeting last month was to improve the gateways to the Town – making the Town a more ‘special place’.
- Workplace discrimination Training: In order to maximize MIIA Rewards, I would be willing to lead town employees through a Workplace Discrimination program.
- Organize housing processes in Town: The affordable housing questions in recent years highlight a need to better organize the boards and committees in the Town, establish policies and procedures and clear areas of responsibilities.
- Improve parks & recreation programs: It is clear that the recreation division of the Town needs some attention. This past year no summer recreation programs were held. The Town needs to explore alternative ways of providing quality services in times of limited/reduced resources.
- Update the Master Plan: The 5 year update of the 2005 Master Plan is due this upcoming year. This must be coordinated and completed for acceptance by Town Meeting.
- Develop a Housing Production Plan: One of the weaknesses our town faces when dealing with unfriendly affordable housing projects is the lack of a Housing Production Plan.
- Renegotiate the trash contract: The trash contract expires at the end of the fiscal year. The Town should be looking at different options for trash and recycling moving forward.
- Explore alternatives for the Town Sewer Department: Since the Sewer contractor contract is up at the end of the fiscal year, the Selectmen would like to explore options to lower costs and improve services at the sewer department.
- Work to improve community preparedness at the personal level: The Selectmen identified a need to help bring personal emergency preparedness to the citizens of the Town.
- Explore options of privatizing more municipal services: The Selectmen identified the need to maintain level services with no additional costs, perhaps even lower costs. Privatization of these services is offered as a means to accomplish this.
- Continue to explore regionalism in all areas of municipal government: This goal could help us to continue to provide adequate services at a time when revenues are down yet service demand remains high.
The Board of Selectmen will be looking at prioritizing these goals in the next few weeks.
