Municipal Health Insurance
Impact of New Health Care Law passed in July 2011
On July 12, 2011, Governor Patrick signed “An Act Relative To Municipal Health Insurance” (Chapter 69 of the Acts of 2011), which allows a municipality to join the Commonwealth's Group Insurance Commission (GIC) in an effort to maintain quality health insurance and reduce the cost.
The new law is a local-option statute that a municipality can choose to accept. In a town, a majority vote is required by the Board of Selectmen.
At the November 28, 2011 Board of Selectmen's meeting, the board and the Town Administrator discussed the issue and the process that is involved should the Town decide to join the GIC. The supporting documents to this discussion are included below.
