In 1878 The West Boylston Public Library was established. The library was housed in the Town Hall during the construction of the reservoir.

In 1911 George Calvin Rice offered to build a new library if the town agreed to buy a plot of land at the intersection of Newton and Central Street and to name the library the "Beaman Memorial Public Library" in honor of his great-great grandfather Major Ezra Beaman.
